Serco raises £53,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care

Serco, together with the UK's Leisure Trusts, has raised over £53,000 for Marie Curie Cancer Care this year by providing the use of swimming pools to support the annual Swimathon event. For the past ten years, Serco and the Leisure Trusts on behalf of which it acts as the Managing Agent, has supported the Swimathon event by providing the use of swimming pools across the country. This year, the use of 20 pools helped to recruit 670 swimmers for the event raising a total of £53,813.54 for Marie Curie Cancer.
Marie Curie Cancer Care is a UK charity dedicated to the care of people with terminal illnesses. A network of over 2,000 nurses provides practical care and support to patients both at home and across nine Hospices located throughout the UK. Serco's fundraising achievement is a significant contribution to the staggering £2.4m raised in total through the Swimathon 2013 event.
Keith Thomas, Managing Director of Serco's Leisure business, said: "Serco together with the Leisure Trusts we work on behalf of, are extremely proud to have supported Swimathon 2013. In total, the support has raised a staggering £53,813.54 for Marie Curie Cancer Care, which we hope will make a real difference to the work the nurses undertake in caring for those with terminal illnesses."
Rachel Athey, Head of Events at Marie Curie, said: "This year's Swimathon has been the most successful yet and we're so grateful for Serco's support, which has helped people to raise such a fantastic sum. All the money raised from this year's Swimathon will enable Marie Curie to continue to provide free nursing care to terminally ill people in their own homes or in one of our nine hospices."
