HMP Kilmarnock marks Remembrance Sunday

Date: 15 Nov 2016

To mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, both prisoners and staff attended a multi-cultural Remembrance Service in the Multi Faith Centre at HMP Kilmarnock, managed by Serco for the Scottish Prison Service.

The chaplaincy team at the prison, led by the Imam, Aamar Riaz, all contributed to a very uplifting event, where prayers were said and thanks given.  Prisoners from the vocational training bricklaying party had built a memorial cairn, which was unveiled and blessed during the service.  This will form the focal point of a memorial garden where the fallen can be remembered throughout the year.

HMP Kilmarnock is currently being inspected by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons for Scotland, and members of the inspection team, including the Chief Inspector, David Strang, were delighted to have the opportunity to attend the service.  All participants were given a small wooden cross to place at the cairn, to show their respect for those who died in all wars.

Michael Guy, Director of the prison, said “I continue to be impressed by how the staff and prisoners work together for the greater good.  At this particular time of the year, we always turn our thoughts to those men and women who have lost their lives whilst protecting us.  The construction of the beautiful cairn in the memorial garden is the perfect area for everyone to remember together.”
