Published: 15 Aug 2019

The Independent Monitoring Board has today published its latest Annual Report on HMP Lowdham Grange, managed and operated by Serco on behalf of the Ministry of Justice.

The Report’s main findings are that:

  • Prisoners are generally treated fairly and that, the Prison Director Mark Hanson emphasises the importance of fairness in the everyday life of the prison.
  • Prisoners are treated humanely and benefit from good facilities which include well-appointed house blocks and cells.
  • Significant good work goes on at the prison in preparation for release.

Commenting on the latest IMB Report, Mark Hanson, Serco’s Prison Director at HMP Lowdham Grange, said:

“We are pleased that the IMB Report recognises that prisoners are treated fairly, humanely and benefit from good facilities at Lowdham Grange and highlights the ‘notable improvements’ we have made in the past year.

“Serco is particularly proud that between 2017 and 2018 violence at HMP Lowdham Grange has been reduced by around 30%. This is as a direct result of our proactive approach and implementation of some innovative initiatives such as the Social Responsibility Unit, a dedicated Violence reduction team,  Weekly Prisoner Management and Stability forum, the implementation of the ‘Changing thinking, ending violence’ programme delivered by Remedi a restorative justice charity, the rapid assessment and actions of intelligence around violence.

“We also note the areas for development in the Report and we are already addressing these.”
