Our standards define: expected individual and corporate behaviours in relation to all business conducted on the Company's behalf; reflect our values of Trust, Care, Innovation and Pride; provide direction on compliance with relevant laws and regulatory requirements where we work; and are sensitive to local customs, traditions and cultures.

How we have performed

Prosecutions

No prosecutions relating to corrupt or anti-competitive behaviour.

Serco Essentials

Completion of Serco Essentials at 91% rate of completion. Serco Essentials is our suite of our mandated training modules covering code of conduct, financial crime, safety and data privacy and security.

World Ethics Day

Recognised World Ethics Day with a range of activities on 18th October 2023.

Viewpoint engagement

‘I never feel under pressure to compromise our ethical standards‘ up 2 to 76; and ‘I can report unethical behaviour or practices without the fear of retaliation’ steady at 74. The question on values, ‘People at Serco live the values’, saw a drop of 2 to 66 whilst pride in Serco remained steady at 70. A programme to reinvigorate our values will be driven in 2024.

Speak Up cases

After an increase during Covid the case rate per 100 employees has returned to pre-covid levels at 1.02 but remains under benchmark (1.37). Anonymous reports remain at 61%. We continue to look at different ways to engage colleagues to recognise and understand speak up and this remains a focus in 2024.

Speak Up

We retained our current Speak Up provider after a formal tender exercise and are working with them to better engage colleagues. We have translated the Speak Up web portal to make reporting of allegations or concerns easier; implemented a dedicated section in Assure to record all remedial actions from Speak Up cases for better tracking and transparency; and implemented an agency Speak Up Framework for workplace investigation relating to agency staff.

Whistleblowing legislation

We have assessed and ensured compliance with all European countries’ new local whistleblowing legislation (including implementing changes where required).

Conflict of Interest tool

We implemented a more effective Conflict of Interest register and tracking tool.

Transparency International UK’s Corporate Anti-Corruption Benchmark

We took part in Transparency International UK’s Corporate Anti-Corruption Benchmark in 2023 and were pleased with the results, especially given our status as a first-time participant.

What next

  • Reinvigorate our values, aligning clearly with our refreshed purpose.

  • Continue to monitor our culture through annual and pulse Viewpoint surveys.

  • Maintain zero prosecutions relating to corrupt or anti-competitive behaviour.

  • Achieve a minimum one-point improvement in the Viewpoint score for the values-related question, ‘People at Serco live the values’.

  • Enhance our investigation practices, notably reflecting better Diversity, Equity and Inclusion practices for workplace investigations.

  • Better and consistent tracking of remedial action from Speak Up cases with a closure of less than 3 months.

  • Complete action in response to recommendations from the Transparency International review of adequate procedures.
