Sharing your information with us

As part of the application process you’ll encounter a range of questions about your age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, criminal convictions, religion or whether you have a disability, limitation or health condition. Here are the reasons why we do this.

Making a positive change at Serco

Serco is truly committed to being an organisation that values the diversity of our people and strives to create a culture that’s inclusive, with access to opportunity available to all employees and to the broadest pool of external applicants possible. To do this we need to better understand our applicants and our workforce, identifying any barriers for certain groups of people - and improving the way we do things as a result.

The information we request falls under two categories:

Anonymous Data Disclosure

When completing your personal profile within our recruitment system you’ll encounter a section asking for personal information about you, for example your gender and ethnicity. This is a statistic gathering exercise used to make sure that everyone is being properly catered for, but also so that we can see where there may be gaps in representation within the business or if there appears to be barriers for certain groups of people. The data you provide will only be used to make things better. In fact, the people involved in our recruitment process do not have access to this information, and those inside the business that do can only see this on an aggregate basis – meaning the information can’t be linked to an individual person.

Open Disclosure for Recruitment Initiatives

Serco is proud to be involved in two recruitment initiatives that involve the open and upfront sharing of personal information as part of the recruitment process. They are:

Disability Confident

We’re a Disability Confident Leader employer and are committed to equal opportunities. Applicants with a disability, limitation or health condition who meet the minimum criteria for the job will be given the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities at an interview. It also means we’ll do our best to reasonably adjust our recruitment process to better support you, such as offering you more time to apply.

Ban The Box

Serco supports fair access to employment for those with unspent criminal convictions through the ‘Ban the Box’ pledge.  Some of roles have to be exempt from this due to the type of security clearance needed to work there, such as in a Prison or on a Defence base – but in all other situations we have a firm commitment to recruit the best person for the job, and that includes the 11 million plus people in the UK with a criminal record.
