The application process: Your recruitment journey in 6 steps

Application

Select the Functional Assessor role you are interested in and submit your application.

Telephone Screening

Your application will be reviewed by one of our Talent Specialists. If you meet the criteria, you’ll be contacted to complete a telephone screening which will include a discussion around the role as well as verifying your current medical registration status.

Online Assessment

If you progress to the next stage, you’ll be asked to complete an online assessment which will consist of a clinical scenario to assess your clinical knowledge and questioning skills.

Interview

Upon review and passing the online assessment, you will then be booked onto either a virtual or face-to-face interview. The interview will be an hour long and competency based.

Offer and Vetting

If you are successful following the assessments, one of our Talent Specialists will call you to make you an offer. If you verbally accept at this stage, we will send you a formal contract of employment.

You will be required to undergo strict security and vetting checks prior to your employment with Serco. This includes

- BPSS security check

- Medical Registration check - to ensure you're fully registered with no restrictions or conditions to practice

- Right To Work verification

Onboarding and Training

While we’re waiting for your clearance to be successfully completed, one of the Talent Specialists will be in touch to discuss next steps and answer any questions you may have.

Once you’ve formally accepted your contract, you’ll be booked onto the next available training course.

What types of assessments are Serco delivering on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions?

Serco is responsible for supporting delivering two types of assessments on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a benefit for people with a long-term health condition or impairment, whether physical, sensory, mental, cognitive, intellectual, or any combination of these. It is paid to make a contribution to the extra costs that disabled people may face, to help them lead full, active and independent lives.

Work Capability Assessment (WCA) is a functional assessment which looks at a range of different activities relating to physical, mental, intellectual and cognitive functions, to determine whether an individual could reasonably be expected to work or undertake work related activity, or not.

What qualifications will I need?

As a Registered Doctor, you’ll be GMC registered with no restrictions to practise and a proven record of relevant Continual Professional Development (CPD) and revalidation.

As a Registered Nurse, you’ll be NMC registered with no restrictions to practise and a proven record of relevant Continual Professional Development (CPD) and revalidation.

As a Registered Physiotherapist, you’ll be HCPC registered with no restrictions to practise and a proven record of relevant Continual Professional Development (CPD) and revalidation.

As a Registered Occupational Therapist, you’ll be HCPC registered with no restrictions to practise and a proven record of relevant Continual Professional Development (CPD) and revalidation.

As a Registered Paramedic, you’ll be HCPC registered with no restrictions to practise and a proven record of relevant Continual Professional Development (CPD) and revalidation.

As a Registered Pharmacist, you’ll be GPhC registered with no restrictions to practise and a proven record of relevant Continual Professional Development (CPD) and revalidation.

What will my working hours/days be?

As a full-time Functional Assessor, you're expected to work from 9am-5pm, Monday-Friday.

Is there a bonus scheme in place?

There is a bonus scheme in place with eligibility of up to 10% of your salary.

What are my hours during my training?

Your working hours during training are Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm.

Will I get paid during training?

Yes, you will be paid from day 1 of your training. This is your first day of employment with Serco.

How long does the training take?

Training pathways are different for Work Capability Assessment (WCA) and Personal Independence Payments (PIP). A well-structured training plan will be provided.

When will I be approved to conduct assessments?

You will be approved to conduct assessments once the learning curve is completed, usually after the approval audit stage.

What are the minimum and maximum number of assessments that I can do each day?

There is a minimum of 3 assessments each day for Personal Independence Payments (PIP) and 5 assessments for Work Capability Assessment (WCA), there is no maximum.

What kind of conditions will I be assessing for claimants?

You’ll be assessing a wide variety of medical conditions including physical, cognitive, sensory and mental health conditions.

What support is available?

We will provide you with all the training and support needed for you to excel in your role as a Functional Assessor.

You will receive personalised clinical coaching from a dedicated coach and participate in communities of practice. We also offer regular and fully funded development opportunities to assist you in meeting your continuous learning and development requirements.
