Building a Dynamic Career and Finding Growth at Serco Kat’s Journey

Kat has spent over 20 years with Serco, shaping a career path that’s totally her own.

Starting as a Personal Assistant, Kat has built an impressive career by exploring new roles, expanding her skill set, and evolving into her current role as Business Support and Engagement Manager for Space & Security within our Defence team. Kat’s journey is a testament to how Serco employees are empowered to shape their own paths, while benefiting from the tools and opportunities for growth along the way.

 

When she first joined, Kat brought her organisational skills from her previous role as an Event Coordinator. “I started as a PA to the Contract Manager on the Skynet contract,” she recalls, noting how she adapted naturally to the role, taking on more responsibilities and soon leading a small team. With each transition in management, Kat found herself increasingly entrusted with broader tasks, allowing her to demonstrate her strengths in both leadership and coordination.

 “The team recognised that I was doing more than just the PA role through the support I was providing to the wider Space & Security contracts and central services,” she explains, telling us how this led to her promotion to Business Support and Engagement Manager, a role where she was able to work across different contracts, facilitate team initiatives, and build engagement throughout the company’s numerous UK locations.

One of the standout aspects of Kat’s career has been Serco’s support for her professional development. Starting with a Team Leader apprenticeship, she went on to pursue CIPD HR qualifications at Levels 3 and 5. “Serco supported me throughout,” Kat says, emphasising the flexibility and encouragement she received. Studying inside and outside of work hours, she gained formal certifications in Human Resources, ultimately becoming a qualified HR professional. While she’s paused formal education for now, Kat is open to further qualifications, saying, “I’m very open to the next step in a Level 7 HR qualification.”

Beyond skill development, Kat’s connection with Serco’s values and her strong rapport with her team are central to her loyalty. When the specific Skynet contract she was working on concluded, Kat was determined to stay with the company.
