Rob had studied sports at university, before joining the Royal Air Force, where he served for 3½ years.

When he left the RAF, he knew that he wanted to find another uniformed service role to make a career of. It just so happened HMP Kilmarnock were recruiting, so a Cornishman ended up relocating to deepest, darkest Scotland.

Armed with his sports degree and experience in the RAF, Rob began his PCO career with Serco, with very little knowledge of what to expect.

He quickly realised his time in the RAF had equipped him with the ability and skills necessary to deal with unexpected and challenging situations.

He also learnt that there was a similar camaraderie to the Forces and that teamwork and communication were key to being a successful officer. The variety of career paths, support and training available within Serco, was something of a surprise to Rob.

And, after working as a PCO for seven years and progressing up the ranks, he decided to put his degree to good use and moved to the PE Department as a PEI. His career progress since has been amazing.

"After 2 years I became the PE teacher for the prison with Ashfield paying and supporting me through my PGCE and my QTS. I’ve then progressed to become the Lead PEI, responsible for the running of the gym and planning events for staff and prisoners. I’ve recently become a Course Team Leader in Education. I’ve been supported by my managers, my peers and the wider Serco team to achieve my career goals at every step, as well as maintain a fantastic work life balance too."
