Zahir had never thought about a career in a prison with Serco, until a colleague at the fast-food restaurant where he was working recommended it to him.

He decided to find out more and quickly realised that as a Prison Officer he’d be able to earn good money, in a secure job, that offered a much wider choice of careers and career direction than he’d ever realised.

He was sold. But he was unsure that his experience to date was enough to succeed in the role. He decided to apply anyway and 17 years later he’s still here. Zahir describes his career as "a rollercoaster ride that I don’t want to get off, supported by a great team of people I’ve worked with, past and present."

Despite being initially unsure about whether his skills would be right for the job, Zahir found that the experience he’d gained as a fast-food Shift Manager was useful for a career as a Prison Officer too.

Things like being able to work under pressure, work through peaks and troughs, manage performance and people, listen to staff and deliver on promises.

Since joining Zahir’s had training, support and the opportunity to progress from Prison Officer into the role of Custodial Operation Manager. He’s currently in a seconded role as Assistant Director of Reducing Reoffending.

I would 100% recommend anyone thinking about working in a prison, to have faith in their abilities and experiences to date as they’re much more valuable to a future as a Prison Officer with Serco than people realise.
