Satcoms
Serco is a major subcontractor on the Skynet 5 programme, supporting critical satellite communications for the UK MoD global communications mission. Serco has been working in partnership with the Main Contractor and the MoD to successfully deliver the service since 2003.
The Skynet 5 programme is a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) for the provision of the satellites, ground station infrastructure and support services for Global Communications to the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), providing secure communications to our Armed Forces around the globe.
Core services we provide in support of the Main Contractor:
- Provision of 24/7/365 managed support services both in the UK and Overseas in benign and hostile operational environments such as; Afghanistan, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, UAE and Cyprus.
- Space operations of the four Skynet 5, four Skynet 4 and one NATO satellite and the associated communication networks.
- 24/7/365 on call engineering support and Facilities Management (FM)
- Deployment around 50 operations and maintenance engineers overseas under Contractors on Deployed Operations (CONDO) conditions.
- Operations and Maintenance support to the US Air Force Satellite Control Network (AFSCN) for up to 140 Spacecraft of all types. This activity at the MoD owned Telemetry and Command Station (TCS) Oakhanger includes a wide range of support activity as part of an Implementation Arrangement and MOU between the US and UK Governments.
- Support Services to the High Integrity Telecommunication System (HITS) which supports the Cabinet Office crisis management facilities and key crisis management centers across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland under the Civil Contingencies Act.
- Space training to all end users of the Skynet5 communications terminals as well to Spacecraft operators.
