HMP Dovegate continues creative Remembrance tradition

Remembrance Day’s commemoration of those who have fallen in the first and second world wars and later conflicts will see millions of people across the UK, pay tribute to fallen servicemen and servicewomen through the laying of wreaths and the taking two-minutes of silence.

For the Serco managed prisons in the UK, Remembrance Day is a key annual event. This is partly due to those employees who are veterans and reservists, but also the prisoner veteran populations.

At HMP Dovegate, prisoners at the prison’s Therapeutic Community (TC) continue a creative Remembrance Day tradition by making handmade ceramic poppies. In 2019, prisoners at HMP Dovegate created 300 poppies and donated them to the Royal British Legion and through the sales of the poppies over £1,500 has been raised for the British Legion.

This year prisoners have not only created stunningly detailed ceramic poppies, but they have also created remembrance themed bookmarks and a painting which will become a prize for a local Royal British Legion Raffle in Uttoxeter.

We look forward to hearing how much has been raised for such a noble cause.
