Serco’s Tech and Innovation Podcast Examines the National Airspace System

Published: 28 Aug 2024

Serco, a provider of professional, technology, engineering, and management services, released the latest episode of the Serco Tech and Innovation Podcast featuring Dave Ritchey, Taleesha Hillman, and Jerry Alvarado, members of Serco's Air Navigation Services team. Together with hosts Don Styer, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Serco and Michael Arce, Serco External Communications Manager, they examine the FAA's Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) initiative. The United States has the world’s busiest and most complex airspace system, and spurred by forecasts of increased air traffic, the FAA started NextGen to make flying safer, more efficient, and more predictable.

For 20-plus years, Serco has been supporting the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Contract Tower Program, responsible for more than 960,000 miles of airspace and handling more than seven million aircraft movements a year.

"I believe we are pioneering new methods of service that unlock significant value and safety for our customer," stated Dave Ritchey, Director of Business Operations. Dave detailed Serco's efforts at Henderson Executive Airport ahead of Super Bowl LVIII that was held in Las Vegas in February 2024. Expecting diverse inbound traffic that includes numerous sized aircraft, including large cabin class corporate jets and a significant helicopter population Serco prepared a "Know Before You Go" video. This training program allowed pilots to study before entering the airspace and familiarize themselves with the airports runways and taxiway system. "That improved safety; the FAA said we had zero events! I think we have over 70,000 views of the video program in days. I'm proud of team, especially the controllers, who managed that busy week."
