From Data to Doing: How AI is Supercharging Human Potential

Published: 3 Sep 2025

Artificial intelligence is no longer a futuristic buzzword; it's a practical tool that's actively reshaping how we work. In a recent episode of the Serco Tech and Innovation Podcast, Alfonso Gomez, Lead Software Engineer at Serco, joined hosts Don Styer, Chief Technology Officer and Michael Arce, Marketing Manager, to discuss how AI is supercharging human potential. The conversation moved beyond abstract concepts to explore how AI is being implemented today as a supportive "sidekick" designed to augment, not replace, human capabilities.

The central theme of the discussion was that AI's primary role is to handle mundane, repetitive tasks, freeing up employees to focus on what they do best: creative thinking and complex problem-solving. Gomez emphasized that this technology is meant to be a supportive partner. This approach helps alleviate common fears about AI in the workplace. Instead, AI is being positioned as a tool to improve employee satisfaction and produce more accurate work by taking on "the busy work." Whether it's finding the right information quickly or generating initial content, AI steps in to accelerate workflows and remove pain points.

A critical component of successfully integrating AI into daily work is building trust. Gomez compared building trust with an AI to working with a new colleague: consistency and reliability are key. To achieve this, transparency is a non-negotiable; users need to understand what the AI is doing for them. When the technology provides consistent, accurate, and verifiable results, confidence grows over time. One example shared was from the talent acquisition team, where AI helps recruiters find candidates with specific skills and clearances much faster than traditional keyword searches by using more advanced semantic search capabilities.

The conversation also highlighted the importance of personalization. AI tools are most effective when they understand the context of the user's role within an organization.

"AI allows you to have a conversation with your documents, with your data."

- Don Styer

By "training" the AI and providing it with a role—such as "act as a technical writer" or "act as a talent acquisition specialist"—the system can deliver more relevant and tailored responses. This conversational approach allows users to interact with vast knowledge bases as if they were speaking to a person, asking nuanced questions and receiving answers framed within the correct context. This process is similar to onboarding a new human employee, where you explain their role, the relevant lingo, and the context of their work to help them succeed.

Looking ahead, Gomez sees the future of AI involving even greater personalization and real-time support. The goal is for AI to become a more proactive assistant, capable of identifying customer needs from meeting notes or analyzing sentiment from feedback to help employees provide better service.

Ultimately, the consensus is that AI is an evolutionary step in how we do business. It empowers individuals and organizations by handling the mundane, allowing people to focus on higher-value tasks.

"AI at this point isn't really a buzzword anymore. It's a practical tool. It's helping people solve problems, connect with the customers, and ultimately, create value within the organization."

- Alfonso Gomez

The key takeaway: remain curious, ask questions, and don't be afraid to experiment with technology. By embracing AI as a digital resource, we can unlock new levels of efficiency and innovation.
