The Future of Readiness: Inside the Distributed Mission Operations Network The Reality of Modern Training

Published: 3 Dec 2025

The Reality of Modern Training

Simulation training is the primary method for preparing our military for complex combat scenarios. On the latest Serco Tech and Innovation Podcast,  Kevin Robinson, Director of Live Virtual Constructive Solutions at Serco, details the power of the Distributed Mission Operations Network (DMON). Co-hosted by Michael Arce, Marketing Manager, and Don Styer, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), we discuss how this technology network connects Air Force simulators across the globe.

Efficiency and Repetition

Live flight training has limits. It is expensive and takes time to reset between maneuvers. The DMON solves this by allowing pilots to repeat difficult tasks instantly. This repetition builds muscle memory and confidence.

"I can do what would take a live flight in two hours. It would be like a week worth of what I could do in a aircraft." - Kevin Robinson

This efficiency ensures pilots master specific skills without the logistical burden of live sorties.

A Secure, Infinite Environment

Live exercises carry security risks. Adversaries can monitor satellites to learn our tactics. The DMON provides a secure, closed environment where tactics remain hidden. It also removes geographic constraints.

"My battle space is infinite. I can go basically simulate the world and we can go from any place in the world that we'd like to." - Kevin Robinson

This allows the Air Force to train in any potential theater of operation without leaving home station.

AI and the Changing Threat

The network evolves to match modern threats. Don Styer, Serco CTO, highlights the shift from scripted enemies to Artificial Intelligence.

"In the old days, we could only plug into the simulation what we knew about red forces. In this case, the AI has some... carte blanche to go in and find new ways to defeat blue." - Don Styer

This evolution means pilots train against an enemy that learns and adapts, providing a more realistic test of their abilities.

Conclusion

The Distributed Mission Operations Network ensures our military remains ready. It saves money, protects sensitive tactics, and connects warfighters globally.
