Naval Design and Engineering Capabilities

Our naval architects and engineers apply decades of experience and intelligent automation to help our clients design and develop the ships and submersibles that are redefining the future of naval warfare. We offer comprehensive engineering services to optimize every mission-critical system and component, including advanced propulsion, displacement, stability, and hydrodynamic performance approaches. We design the hull and internal structures to ensure the longevity, survivability, producibility, and cost of ships, with an ultimate focus on mission performance and the safety of servicemembers.

Solutions We Provide

  • 3D Printing & Prototyping – We have the expertise to create intricate ship components and models using additive manufacturing techniques. This ability includes prototyping from design by producing complex vessel types and manufacturing advanced forms and component parts for various systems. Our team can quickly iterate designs, allowing visualization and processing changes at a fraction of the cost of traditional methods. Such capabilities enable Serco to explore innovative designs and accelerate the overall development processes, leading to cutting-edge maritime solutions.
  • Communications, Signal Processing, Control & Monitoring – We support the installation of communication and mission systems with installation engineering, equipment design and testing, logistics, onsite installation support, ship installation kits, cost estimates, documentation, and technical manuals.
  • Detail Design - We work with customers from concept design all the way through to detail design and delivery of shipyard manufacturing information. Our detail design team will work with a functional design from a shipyard or our own engineering team and develop a 3D product model using whatever tool and format the shipyard needs. 
  • Digital Engineering – Serco has embraced the digital engineering framework to help our clients evaluate design tradeoffs, promote open architecture and collaboration, and facilitate future upgrades and modifications at a lower cost. We create a system of systems (SoS) architecture integrating C4I and hull mechanical and electric models to develop a platform-level digital twin of the ship. This model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach enables clients to predict design changes' mission and cost impact and communicate with vendors efficiently.
  • High-speed Vessel Design – Serco has diverse expertise in designing high-speed vessels, including catamarans and ferries, surface effect ships that combine catamaran hulls and air cushions, and air cushion vessels. We are leaders in green ship technologies, including hybrid electric drive systems, alternative fuels, and minimal environmental impact designs.
  • Marine Engineering – Serco’s full-service engineering and design services cover vessels from the cradle to the grave, from analyzing alternatives on the front end to contract and detail designs and then lifecycle support. We have expertise in all relevant engineering disciplines, including electrical engineering, survivability, ship structure and integrity, and shock design and analysis. We are leaders in integrated electric propulsion for ships.
  • Personnel Accommodation Module (PAM) Design and Fabrication - Our company is the first to pass through the new ABS Container PAM certification process. Serco has the expertise and experience to design and fabricate, from conceptualization or existing requirements, living and working spaces for personnel aboard ships, offshore platforms, or other marine structures. 
  • Ship Design and Naval Architecture – Building on decades of experience, Serco's naval architects have designed some of the world's most advanced military and research vessels. Beginning with feasibility and concept development, we collaborate with clients to determine performance requirements and create innovative ship concepts that form the basis for performance assessments and rough-order cost estimates. We iterate these to produce more detailed preliminary and contract designs, including hull form design, hydrostatics, stability analysis, model testing, and production cost estimates.
  • Ship Integration & Production – Once a ship is designed, we offer ship integration and production supervision so that all systems work together seamlessly. Our engineers develop detailed design, construction, and installation drawings and specifications. We provide land-based testing and engineering, ship change document (SCD) support, equipment design, and onsite construction management and inspection.
  • Topside Design, EMI & RADHAZ – Our design approach ensures electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) compliance for critical communications and weapons systems. We help protect personnel, ordnance, and fuel from hazardous electromagnetic radiation. And our designs provide ships and facilities with electromagnetic pulse (EMP) protection.
  • Software Development – Serco possesses the comprehensive skillsets to take software projects from concept to completion. This includes proficiencies in programming languages, designing scalable architectures, implementing efficient algorithms, conducting testing, maintaining code quality, and collaborating effectively across multiple industry teams to deliver successful and robust software solutions.   Our team has experience in various areas of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning development and algorithms, as well as developing executive autonomy packages, learning schedules such as ship controls processing, and machinery controls and predictability packages.
