Intelligent Transport Systems

Serco has over 30 years of experience developing and operating Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for national highways, state-wide transportation networks, major cities, counties, and municipalities. We enable our customers to define a vision of an advanced intelligent transportation system that best suits their needs, roll it out quickly, achieve high levels of efficiency and safety from day one, and then monitor and analyze performance based on agreed-upon metrics. Increasingly, state and regional transportation authorities are looking to take an integrated approach to surface transportation that marries the efficiencies of ITS technology with a focus on safety outcomes, quality of service, and driver satisfaction.

Serco is uniquely qualified to take on complex programs integrating multiple service lines. We provide our customers with in-depth data analytics, incident "heat maps," intelligent traffic management and tolling systems and optimized safety responses that save lives and keep travelers and commerce moving. We provide ITS as a managed service solution encompassing the full spectrum of regional transportation needs, including the traffic management center, bridge and tunnel operations, ITS and traffic signal maintenance, incident management and Safety Service Patrol (SSP), technology integration and tolling services. Our integrated solutions encompass system development and integration, operational control centers, incident detection and management, lane control signals, CCTV control and surveillance, intelligent congestion management, and manual and automated toll collection.

Solutions we provide

  • Bridge & Tunnel Operations – We offer integrated operations of bridges and tunnels to optimize traffic flow and road safety within a dynamic framework of shifting transportation needs.
  • Data Analytics – Serco enables customers to make data-driven decisions based on analysis of travel time, congestion monitoring and safety devices to ensure the safe and smooth movement of people and goods.
  • Incident Management Response & Safety Service Patrol – Serco provides personnel who patrol interstates and highways and act as first responders on the scene of incidents. SSP Operators secure the scene, provide first aid to the injured, tow disabled vehicles and their occupants off the interstate to safer locations, remove debris and road hazards from travel lanes and respond to natural disasters to help with evacuation and the movement of critical supplies and services.
  • ITS Field Equipment Operations & Maintenance – Serco has operated in the tolling industry for over 20 years. We support incident management of tolling facilities, including patrols, maintenance, gate arm repairs and the operation of reversible roadways. By providing both the patrolling and maintenance aspects, Serco helps keep tolling facilities operating at peak capacity.
  • TIM/First Responder Training – Serco trains multiple first responder communities on how to safely and quickly clear traffic incidents to help prevent congestion and secondary accidents, reducing injuries and expediting clearance of roadways.
  • Traffic Management Centers – Serco operates control centers for municipal or regional transportation operations. TMCs oversee operations such as traffic signal systems, traffic incident management, tolling systems, managed lanes and traveler information strategies to ensure roadways operate smoothly.
  • Traffic Signal Systems – Our traffic engineers oversee these systems' design, installation and timing. Serco traffic signal engineers measure traffic volumes, capacity and timing to ensure the adequate safe movement of vehicle traffic, pedestrian traffic and ingress-egress of commercial roadways.

Key Facts

  • Our Integrated Maintenance Management System (IMMS) provides a consolidated view of 3,500 separate devices for Georgia’s Department of Transportation (GDOT) sophisticated Intelligent Transportation System.
  • When Serco began working with GDOT in 2010, device availability hovered around 50%. Serco was able to bring this to an average of 99.3% which is significantly above industry standards.
  • In 2016, GDOT and the Serco team received the Best of ITS Award at the ITS America conference.
  • Serco provides traffic incident management services to the Texas Department of Transportation (Austin, San Antonio and El Paso Divisions) and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LaDOTD) to help keep motorists moving.
