Serco Canada Indigenous and Local Partnerships

Our Commitment: Indigenous Relations, Engagement, and Partnerships

Partnerships are more than business related, but include community, education, social and economic partnerships, and investments. To achieve these successful partnerships, Serco is committed to our continued growth of engagement with Indigenous Peoples and Businesses across our Canadian Operations.

Serco Canada respectfully recognizes the Traditional Territories of First Nations, Inuit and Metis Peoples where our services are carried out across the Canadian portions of Turtle Island (North America). We recognize the unique, Cultural, Traditional Sacredness that Indigenous Peoples have held and hold with the Land since time immemorial.

Serco Canada recognizes the significance of work, stories and history of Truth and Reconciliation and the 94 Calls to Action, with a particular focus on Call to Action 92, iii) Business and Reconciliation, which calls upon corporate Canada to engage in reconciliation and set out three clear ways the corporate sector can contribute to understanding and respecting Indigenous rights, as well as to promoting economic advancement for Indigenous Peoples and Communities.

Our Commitment

Serco Canada is committed to continued strong, sustainable relations with Indigenous communities that advance Truth and Reconciliation through various efforts, such as new businesses and community investments, the hiring of more Indigenous Employees, enhancing social impact, expanding access to Indigenous Traditional Knowledge, and improving how Serco Canada Teams and Programs do business, with Indigenous clients, Organizations, Governments, and Communities.

All engagement and business opportunities with Indigenous Peoples, Communities, Businesses, and Governments will complement and be in-line with Serco values of Trust, Care, Innovation and Pride.

Serco is proud of our track record of forming partnerships in each of the communities in Canada where we have operations based on the principles of consultation, collaboration, and inclusion.

We have rewarding relationships with Indigenous groups encompassing subcontracting, apprenticeships, skills development, hiring, mentoring, and small business training. Serco has awarded millions of dollars in contracts to Indigenous small business suppliers to help them build sustainable capacity.

We have supported Indigenous training and apprenticeship programs, particularity in our Northern operations at 5 Wing Goose Bay, where over 40% of our workforce is Indigenous employees.

Impacting a Better Future

A noteworthy example of investing in the local community is our training programs for firefighters at 5 Wing Goose Bay. Serco Partnered with the Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership (LATP) and the Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation (SIFN) to train firefighters so the SIFN would have qualified firefighting staff for their new fire hall on the SIFN Reserve. The firefighters were all local SIFN residents who carried out the skills they had obtained under the Serco firefighting training to protect their community.

We have invested in the local community through our training programs for air traffic controllers at 5 Wing Goose Bay. The competition for qualified, talented air traffic controllers is notoriously fierce, and Canada’s military forces have discovered that employees serving in remote locations are often poached away with higher salaries at large airports in more “desirable” urban centers.

Serco responded to this challenge by providing a training program in air traffic control skills targeted to local residents. Reporting showed that they were more likely to make a long-term commitment to pursuing their profession in the community. As a result, approximately 75% of those working in the Air Traffic Control Towers are now local residents, who attained their certification through Serco sponsored training programs.

Living Our Values

Embodying our commitment to our Value of Care, the Serco team proudly supports the local community. For example, Serco's School Supplies Initiative donated to the Labrador Friendship Centre, whose mandate is to "to enrich the lives of Indigenous Peoples of Labrador through the provision and implementation of social, cultural, health, educational, employment and developmental initiatives."

We've also support community-based food banks, Indigenous cultural programs, and equality and inclusion initiatives to address urgent needs that our employees care about. These are just a few examples of how Serco is working with our communities for a better Canada.
