Chantal Vrijdaghs: "Building bridges: Chantal's transition from crafts to defence management"

In the European defence sector, Serco stands out for its commitment to fostering talent and encouraging career transformation. Chantal's journey with Serco is a good illustration of the value we place on diverse experiences and the ability to adapt and grow.

At 55, Chantal has a professional background that spans over two decades, starting in the lamp production industry at Silvania, before moving through various roles, including time in the chocolate industry, hosting, and styling. Chantal’s career took a significant turn when she joined Serco's operations in the Belgium military campus of Saffraanberg- the Saffraanberg Royal Military School. Initially hired as a Service Desk Agent, Chantal quickly demonstrated her capabilities, moving up to Service Delivery Manager and then to Site Manager, with precious guidance from her predecessor, Laurence.

Though her initial career didn't directly align with supporting the Belgian defence, Chantal now takes pride in contributing to a greater purpose. Through her work with Serco, she plays a role in enabling the military to concentrate on their core duties of serving the country, feeling connected in some ways to a broader mission for her nation.

In her role at the Royal School of Non-Commissioned Officers (ERSO) in Saffraanberg, Chantal oversees our contract providing facility services to over 500 students. This position demands flexibility, organisational acumen, a customer-centric approach, and a constant drive to tailor solutions to the needs of students, customers, suppliers, and colleagues.

Chantal's story is notable not only for her career progression but also for her commitment to self-improvement – she is the kind of person who always goes above and beyond. Her decision to build her own home showcased her practical skills in construction, complemented by six years of woodworking courses. These experiences ultimately proved to be assets to Serco team at Saffraanberg, allowing her to lead and effectively support some projects.

Serco's support for Chantal’s career development highlights our dedication to providing employees with opportunities for growth and development. Each employee brings special skills and personality, and that’s what Serco as an employer wants to bring about.

"I quickly found my way with Serco colleagues. Coming in with my expertise, I soon found my place within the team. Working on the campus now feels like being part of a family. Everyone is kind and supportive. I can truly sense the Serco values of care and trust in my work."
