Six years ago, two students – Marco Casanova Álvarez and Ana Cambon – finished school and left home to seek their fortunes in Aerospace Engineering, starting at the University of Vigo in Spain.
And today?
Working for Serco in Germany, they are pursuing exciting careers beyond their student dreams as they support our customers’ prestigious space missions.
Marco Casanova Álvarez
ESA-ESOC, Darmstadt, Germany
Marco started at Serco as a Spacecraft Analyst for the ESA Gaia mission, which is pushing the boundaries of knowledge about the Milky Way by creating an unprecedented 3D map of the galaxy. Since January 2023 he has been working at ESOC as an EarthCare Data Handling Spacecraft Operations Engineer.

Ana Cambon
EUMETSAT, Darmstadt, Germany
Ana is a Spacecraft Controller for Sentinel-3 satellites in the ESA Copernicus project, an Earth observation programme studying our planet and its environment for the benefit of mankind.
From master’s degree to Serco
Marco and Ana, who had remained in higher education to complete master’s degrees in Space Engineering, were frustrated with the available employment opportunities after university. With no work experience, meaningful employment eluded them at every turn. They took heart from a friend's experience with Serco, deciding to try their luck with the company as well.

“I have had terrible interviews with other companies and was expecting yet another rejection,” says Marco, “but it was totally different with Serco. They were far more interested in me and what I could do than what I had done.”
Ana's interview experience had also been impressive, and the follow up even better: “They did everything to help me move from Spain to Germany,” she explains. “They made it so easy. Once I arrived, it was amazing. I have been surrounded by super nice people who are always kind and supportive. I love it.”
They have all been impressed by Serco’s focus on development.
