Serco commits to greater opportunities for employees with disability in new workforce plan
Published: 3 Dec 2021
To coincide with the International Day of People with Disability, Serco Asia Pacific has launched a new workforce plan that outlines how the organisation supports employees with disability and is committing to greater career pathways and opportunities.
The Accessibility Participation Plan centres around four goals: Inclusion, Opportunity, Accessibility and Accountability and recognises the invaluable contribution that people with disability make in the community and workplace.
For Ben Bayot, Serco’s Managing Director – Facilities Management and Executive Sponsor of the Plan, a backyard accident as a child resulted in full blindness in one eye. His disability has not stopped him from achieving throughout his life, in work and sport, or having a full social and family life.
“Launching this plan is personal to me because I am extremely passionate about supporting people to reach their full potential. I know from my own experience that there can be invisible barriers that prevent people with disability from having access to the same opportunities as others and we want to change this,” Ben said.
“We all have a responsibility to listen to people’s experiences, reflect on our attitudes and behaviours, and shift the conversation around disability, as the theme of International Day of People with Disability calls on us to do.”
“The important work that our people do makes a positive difference to the communities we serve every year and this include some of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged people in our society, ranging from our prison and justice system through to social housing, health and aged care and contact centres.”
“It's important that our teams represent the communities we serve so that we can better understand the challenges people face, provide accessible services and create a more inclusive environment for everyone. This means creating positive, safe workplaces, where all employees feel supported and are treated with dignity and respect, and being an employer of choice for people with disability.”
