Training and Simulation

Preparing Defence personnel for operational readiness

Serco delivers accredited, simulation-enabled naval training that prepares Defence personnel for the demanding and complex scenarios they will face at sea. Our approach combines immersive simulation, instructor-led delivery and continuous improvement to build the judgement, decision-making and technical mastery required for safe and effective operations.

This means a proven training model that builds judgement, decision-making and technical competence in a controlled environment, supporting safe navigation and clear progression through RNZN training pathways.

We bring together in-house expertise and trusted partners to design, deliver and optimise training systems that are reliable, scalable and aligned to operational needs.

Serco has a long and established track record supporting naval training across Australia and New Zealand. We have delivered maritime warfare and navigation training within simulated operational environments for over a decade, alongside sustained technical support to complex simulator systems.

Our training model is built on experienced instructors supported by advanced simulation capability. Our teams are primarily former naval personnel drawn from the Royal Australian Navy, Royal New Zealand Navy and Royal Navy, bringing real operational insight into training delivery.

Delivering capability uplift and mission-ready officers

Serco has delivered maritime warfare and navigation training at HMAS Watson since 2012. Working within Australia’s primary naval warfare training establishment, Serco provides instructor-led and simulator-enabled training across the full career continuum, from foundational navigation skills through to advanced warfare and command-level decision-making.

The contract is underpinned by a workforce of experienced former naval personnel and supported by high-fidelity simulation environments that replicate real-world operational scenarios. Serco also provides technical support, maintenance and enhancement of training systems, ensuring reliability, continuity and ongoing capability uplift.

In New Zealand Serco provide high-quality simulator-based bridge warfare training and support services on behalf of the RNZN at Devonport Naval Base, HMNZS Philomel.

Through the operation of the RNZN’s Bridge Simulators, we have been training young Bridge Warfare Officers in ship operations, bridge operations and navigation in a simulated war fighting environment since 2020.

Serco has proudly worked in partnership with the RNZN to develop training systems, solutions and courseware that has enabled officers to learn both theoretical and practical skills critical to their specialisation as Bridge Warfare Officers, Navigating Officers and Commanding Officers.

A future-ready training model

Simulation is central to Serco’s approach to training. It provides a safe, repeatable environment where personnel can develop skills, apply techniques and learn from experience before operating at sea.

Our global Defence capability is built on continuous improvement and innovation. We actively monitor, evaluate and refine training delivery to ensure alignment with evolving operational requirements and emerging technologies.

Focused on delivering training that strengthens operational capability, we integrate experienced people, advanced simulation and structured learning design, to support the development of officers who are ready to perform in safety-critical environments.
