Serco recognised by AAD for operational excellence during RSV Nuyina’s 2024/25 Antarctic season

Published: 3 Nov 2025

Serco is proud to have been presented a Certificate of Appreciation by Emma Campbell, Head of the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD), recognising outstanding achievement in the delivery of complex resupply and scientific voyages on the RSV Nuyina during the 2024/25 Australian Antarctic Program season.

During the season, Serco successfully delivered 265 days of availability. This included the vessel’s dedicated scientific research voyage to one of the most remote locations on Earth – Antarctica’s Denman Glacier. Throughout this voyage, safe navigation by the Bridge Team in trying conditions remained paramount, deck teams supported 24-hour marine science projects, maintenance and upkeep continued 24/7 without interruption and the catering team delivered more than 30,000 meals in just 11 weeks to crew and expeditioners.

The successful season was the result of the strong partnership between Serco and the AAD, and extensive planning ahead of the season, with every team – from Engineering to the Bridge Team, IRs and beyond – contributing to ensure the vessel was optimised to face extended periods in the harshest of conditions, where the environment can change at a moment’s notice.

Peter Behrendt, Managing Director – Defence at Serco, said of the recognition, “Serco is proud to continuously bring together the right people, the right technology and the right partners to deliver exceptional service for the AAD. Our crew and shore team, from engineers to operations leaders, have an unwavering focus on safety, innovation and ensuring AAD researchers can achieve as much science as possible on every voyage. We work in close partnership with AAD leadership to ensure that every mission is a success, and we are proud of our history delivering complex maritime logistics with operational excellence.”

Ronan Maguire, Contract Manager for the RSV Nuyina, said, “We extend our warmest thanks to Emma Campbell and the whole team at the AAD for this recognition of our dedication and role in enabling critical science and resupply for Australia’s Antarctic Program. Right now, Australia’s leadership in the maritime space is more essential than ever. We look forward to continuing to deliver real value for the AAD and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water, with the support of the Minister for the Environment and Water, Murray Watt, and the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Julie Collins.”
