Building connection through music at Kohuora

Published: 21 May 2026

Over the past two years, Serco has proudly collaborated with Auckland Philharmonia to deliver a three‑day voluntary ‘Soundscapes’ music experience for groups of 18–20 men, as part of our rehabilitation programmes. The kaupapa of the programme is simple but profound: for the Auckland Phil, it is about taking music to the wider community; for Serco, it is about creating positive cultural experiences that broaden horizons and support personal growth.

“Can I try the cello?” 🎻

It was a simple question, but one that set the tone for something truly special at Kohuora Auckland South Corrections Facility recently.

Moments later, one man was joined by his peers, all eager to learn, listen and take part as the Auckland Phil brought music into the Fale Pasifika. What followed was a powerful, moving experience and one that reminded everyone present of the unique ability of music to connect people, open minds and create shared moments of joy.

For many of the men involved, the Soundscapes experience offers a rare opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone, express themselves creatively and escape the everyday through sound and shared learning. From the very first workshop, the atmosphere was warm, respectful and full of anticipation, as participants introduced themselves, thanked the musicians for being there and took their seats, ready to take part.

Rather than performing to the men, the Auckland Phil musicians played with them – inviting everyone to join in on bucket drums, guitar, vocals and percussion. From classical pieces by Bach and Piazzolla, to Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, which was specifically requested by the men, and Six60’s Don’t Forget Your Roots, the Fale was alive with energy, laughter and genuine connection.

One unforgettable highlight was hearing the men sing waiata together, perfectly in tune, filling the space with a sound that was both uplifting and deeply moving. 🎤

At Serco, we know rehabilitation is about more than programmes; it’s about dignity, connection and creating moments that inspire change. Thank you to everyone who made Soundscapes possible and helped build connection through music in our community. 🎼
