Driving environment initiatives with EV’s
Serco’s Hong Kong team has signed two new contracts with the Transport Department of the Government of Hong Kong for the Management, Operation, and Maintenance (MOM) of four key tunnels.
The Shing Mun Tunnels and Tseung Kwan O Tunnel (SMTs & TKOT) contract mobilised on June 1, 2024, the Kai Tak Tunnel and Lion Rock Tunnel (KTT & LRT) contract mobilised on August 1, 2024, both with a six-year term.
Drawing upon our 30 years of experience in maintaining, operating, and managing tunnels in Hong Kong, our dedicated team of 380 professionals ensures that the more than 300,000 drivers who use the tunnels daily can reach their destinations without delay.
Under these contracts, Serco will deliver 24/7 operations, including a comprehensive range of services such as regular road patrolling, vehicle recovery services, traffic management during incidents, and maintenance of all systems within the tunnels, ensuring the smooth flow of hundreds of thousands of drivers daily.

With the initiation of the new contract, the team seized the opportunity to incorporate electric vehicles (EVs) into the fleet, supporting both the company's and the client's environmental targets. This move aligns with Hong Kong's Environmental Objective No. 3 - transitioning to alternative fuel vehicles - while also reinforcing Serco's commitment to sustainability.
Across these four contracts, the team has deployed 10 EVs, replacing the previously used petrol cars. This has been instrumental in reducing carbon and greenhouse gas emissions while improving roadside air quality.
To put this into perspective, deploying 10 EVs over a six-year contract is equivalent to taking about 60 cars off the roads in terms of reducing CO2 emissions.
By deploying EVs, our team demonstrates a proactive approach to positively impacting the Hong Kong community by reducing carbon emissions and supporting the government's environmental goals. Serco is proud to play a crucial role in the safe and efficient movement of traffic in Hong Kong, delivering operational excellence and enhancing the city's transport systems while contributing to its environmental targets.
