Empowering First Nations mariners

In partnership with the Sea Heritage Foundation and the Princes Trust, Serco continues to facilitate our maritime training program for First Nations students onboard within the Defence Marine Support Services (DMSS) contract.

Our two-year Indigenous traineeship began in 2023, providing First Nations Australians with an opportunity to obtain a national VET qualification in the Maritime sector.

As part of this program, we recently offered two traineeship opportunities to the TAFE NSW 2023 Indigenous General Purpose Hands graduating cohort, with the aim of launching their careers in early 2024 with Serco’s Indigenous Tanker Crew Program.

In a sector that is experiencing a significant national workforce and skills shortage, we are proud to provide pathways for students to bolster Australia’s Maritime capability. Through our program, students have the opportunity to gain valuable experience and develop skills that will prepare them for a career in the maritime sector.

Our qualified trainers are committed to providing high-quality vocational education and training programs that help trainees learn new skills, upgrade existing ones, and earn nationally recognised qualifications through Serco’s Registered Training Organisation.

By setting our students up for success to finish as qualified mariners, we are committed to providing meaningful experiences and pathways to increase First Nations' participation in the industry.
