Former Navy Officer revolutionises maritime training with cutting-edge technology
Serco is committed to enhancing and building a broader Australian industry capability by supporting local industry partners in advancing their innovative solutions.
Joe Currin, a former Warfare Officer in the Royal Navy and Serco employee where he held various roles in our HMAS Watson Training Services team, recently established Navity, a maritime training technology company.
During his time at Serco, Joe gained valuable insights into how industry partners contribute to the Australian Defence Force and the industry's needs and challenges, especially in the maritime training domain. Leveraging his experience, insights, and a desire to push the boundaries through integrating technology with maritime education, Joe created Navity, an innovative educational software solution for maritime students.
"This is an exciting period for computing and software innovations, and it's important that defence and maritime education can benefit from the latest advances," Joe said.
Navity addresses a key challenge in traditional maritime training – the heavy reliance on resource-intensive simulators and ships, along with the need for numerous instructors and expensive equipment.
Offering a transformative solution that seamlessly transitions trainees from classroom learning to practical application, Navity provides personalised simulations accessible on various devices, anytime and anywhere, eliminating the constant need for instructor oversight. This approach not only provides enriching learning experiences that solidify students' knowledge, but also significantly reduces dependence on resource-heavy training methods.
To support the success of small Defence industry partners and strengthen Australia's industry capability, Joe believes large organisations such as Serco have the reach and resources to enable and amplify innovative solutions developed by these companies.
As an early success, Navity commenced its support for the Royal Australian Navy in September 2023 through a subcontracting agreement with Serco, enhancing their Maritime Warfare Officers' training. We are proud to bolster our service delivery and contribute to strengthening the capability of the Australian Defence Force through partnerships with local industry players such as Navity.
Looking ahead, Joe plans to expand Navity's educational offerings, develop new technologies, and collaborate with more educational institutions to enhance maritime training programs globally.
