Supporting veterans and reservists

Serco has an ongoing commitment to forming strong connections both internally and externally with veterans, reservists, and their families. As a proud and trusted industry partner, Serco provides critical support services to Defence organisations around the globe. The deep expertise that veterans bring to this military setting builds on our capabilities and our specialist teams.

Serco proudly employs more than 700 veterans and reservists across Australia – over 5% of our workforce. They are employed across various contracts in different sectors such as Defence, Justice, Immigration, Citizen Services, Facilities Management and Health. Veterans and reservists are employed across all organisational levels of the business. Among them is Serco Defence Managing Director, and retired Rear Admiral, Clint Thomas, AM, CSC.

“As an employer we are dedicated to actively hiring, developing and retaining veterans, reservists and Defence family members as we understand the experience and value they bring to our teams and the business,” Mr Thomas said.

“We have a significant reservist and veteran presence right across the business and we are always working to ensure we support these veterans as they transition into civilian life. Like the Australian Defence Force (ADF), we promote a strong values-based culture, built on trust and pride, two values that are ingrained in those that serve our country.”

SercoVets

In 2022 we established our Veteran, Reservist and Defence family Members Advisory Committee (VRFAC). The committee aims to further strengthen our commitments to this very important group of employees by looking at a range of projects and initiatives to further enhance and develop our veterans. The first initiative formed was SercoVets.

The SercoVets community gives those veterans, family or allies an opportunity for engagement and collaboration with others who share a passion for veterans and veterans' initiatives. Veterans and reservists bring knowledge, experience, skills, clearances and a strong work ethic necessary to help us and our customers be successful on our important programs.

“I’m a proud veteran and equally proud to be part of Serco since my transition from the ADF in 2018,” said VRFAC Chair Andy Maclean. “SercoVets is a community to share information and tools that will continue to support ADF veterans to succeed in their civilian life.”

Our partnerships and sponsorships

Solider On

We have been a platinum pledge partner to Solider On since 2018 and will continue to help secure the future of veterans and their families in 2023 and beyond.

“We recognise the immense value veterans bring to our team, and in partnering with organisations such as Solider On we show are dedication to fostering an inclusive environment where veterans are set up for success,” Mr Thomas said.

Mr Thomas said he was delighted to continue the important partnership with Soldier On as Serco further commits to developing a robust veteran and reservist workforce across Australia.

Wounded Heroes

We recently contributed $3,000 to Wounded Heroes Australia to provide immediate emergency support to current ADF members, veterans and their families. We recognise the importance of working with community organisations such as this and we know this contribution will create a positive impact where it's needed.

Legacy

Serco has a long history as a partner to the Australian Defence Force and employer of veterans, which is why we are so proud to be sponsoring the Legacy Centenary Torch Relay. Over the next six months, Serco staff in contracts across Australia will be fundraising, volunteering and cheering on the torch bearers as they make their way around the country to raise $10 million for veterans’ families as part of Legacy Australia’s 100th anniversary.

Prime Minister’s National Veterans Employment Awards

We are proud to sponsor the Prime Minister’s National Veterans’ Employment Awards in 2023. The Awards recognise organisations that employ and support veterans, and partners of current and former serving ADF personnel, as well as celebrating veterans and partners who are doing great things as an employee or entrepreneur.

In addition to the sponsorship, Serco has this year been named as a finalist in the Employer of the Year award category – an honour proudly bestowed for three consecutive years. The annual awards recognise the achievements of Australian organisations that actively recruit, employ and support veterans and partners, and create workplaces where they can thrive.
