Empowering our veteran and reservists colleagues

Originally from the remote South Pacific Island of Niuatoputapu (a volcanic island in the nation of Tonga, Pacific Ocean) Joye Unga's journey is driven by his commitment to serve his community and country.

Since joining Serco in 2007, Joye has played a crucial role as a Biomedical Engineer on Serco's Medical and Dental Equipment Support Services contract at Joint Logistics Unit (East). Alongside his biomedical engineer colleagues, his responsibilities include conducting preventive maintenance, testing, and calibration of a wide range of Australian Defence Force (ADF) medical and dental equipment. Joye also collaborates closely with ADF and Serco personnel to ensure the timely completion of scheduled maintenance activities, including annual trips to Malaysia's Butterworth Airbase for maintenance testing.

Surrounded by ADF personnel daily and driven by a desire to give back through service and volunteering, Joye seized the opportunity to join the ADF as a reservist. Currently serving as a Combat Engineer for the Australian Army Reserve based in Holsworthy Barracks 5ER Squadron, Sydney, NSW, Joye's role involves undertaking complex and challenging tasks vital for Defence operations.

Reflecting on his experience, Joye emphasises, "Joining the Australian Army Reserve was one of the most challenging but rewarding things I have done in my personal and professional career." His reservist experience has equipped him with invaluable skills including leadership, resilience, time management, communication, teamwork, engineering expertise, and interpersonal abilities, all of which contribute to his growth both professionally and personally.

In support of Joye's reservist commitments, Serco provides paid leave, ensuring flexibility in his working hours when participating in Army activities, exercises, or training.

Serco proudly supports veterans and reservists like Joye, recognising the immense value they bring to both organisations and the broader community. With over 550 veterans and 150 reservists employed across Australia as of March 2024, Serco remains committed to fostering opportunities for its colleagues to contribute to the Australian Defence Force and beyond.
