Delivering facilities management excellence at one of Australia’s most advanced tertiary hospitals.
Between 2011 and 2014, Serco played a key role in commissioning Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth - a $2 billion project and the largest infrastructure development ever undertaken by the Western Australian Government at the time.
Working closely with WA Health and Multiplex, our specialist team designed integrated facilities management services and workforce management solutions to support the hospital’s long-term operational success.
As construction neared completion, Serco established site security, procured and deployed essential equipment, built the hospital’s ICT infrastructure, and recruited and trained more than 1,000 local people to deliver operational excellence from day one.
Today, Fiona Stanley Hospital is a 783-bed tertiary facility offering a full range of medical and surgical services, including the State burns service, a 140-bed State Rehabilitation Service, comprehensive cancer care, and state-of-the-art emergency services.
Serco continues to support the hospital’s efficient operation by delivering 21 non-clinical services across all areas of the facility.

Our commitment to continuous improvement and operational excellence supports the Hospital to deliver its promise of providing exceptional patient care.Innovation spotlight - AGVs help to support efficiently
To enhance operational efficiency and support staff wellbeing, Serco introduced and continues to operate 16 Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) dedicated to linen transport. These motorised trolley transport vehicles move heavy loads across the facility, reducing manual handling and injury risk. By automating linen transport, the AGVs help create a safer, more efficient working environment, supporting Serco’s commitment to innovation in healthcare services.
Running on the hospital’s wireless network, the AGVs operate between 6am and 6pm, and respond to staff via handheld PDAs. Each unit can call lifts, return to charging stations, and safely navigate hospital corridors. With a 500kg capacity, they deliver linen at optimal times for each ward.
The AGVs complete over 1,200 deliveries each week, moving FSH linen trolleys across 41 drop-off points covering 350 kilometres. This automation supports efficient hospital operations and reflects Serco’s ongoing commitment to innovation and improved patient outcomes
Sustainability spotlight - from table to compost
As part of Serco’s goal to divert 90% of waste from landfill by 2030, the Waste Management Team at Fiona Stanley Hospital introduced a food organics recycling stream in partnership with South Metropolitan Health Service.
Previously, food waste was sent to landfill, generating harmful methane emissions. Now, catering staff separate food scraps into organics bins, which are collected daily and sent to a composting facility.
Since launching in March 2023, over 320,000 kg of organic waste has been diverted from landfill. Non-perishable items are donated to OzHarvest, helping support local communities.
Approximately 80% of kitchen waste has been successfully diverted from landfill, reflecting our commitment to sustainable practices. The initiative was also recognised as a finalist in the Institute of Hospitality in Healthcare (IHHC) 2023 Excellence Awards for innovation in sustainable hospitality
