We actively involve ourselves in local business development projects and partnerships that benefit local communities, including charity work and volunteering.

How we have performed

The Serco Foundation

The Serco Foundation is a charitable trust, working internationally, to enhance public service outcomes for vulnerable citizens. In 2023, it supported 35 charities with grants totaling more than £184k. For more information go to www.sercofoundation.org.

The Serco People Fund

The Serco People Fund is an independent charity providing grants to current and retired Serco colleagues when they face extraordinary financial challenges. In 2023 the fund supported 270 colleagues with grants totalling over £400k. 2023 beneficiaries include a UK colleague who needed help starting a new life after fleeing years of abuse, and a Middle East colleague who has struggled to cope with the impact of a lifetime autoimmune disease affecting her son.

Inspiring future generations

Few in Serco are as passionate about inspiring future generations of scientists, technologists, engineers and mathematicians (STEM) as our UK Defence colleagues, and the Serco team at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose in Cornwall are no exception. In the last year, with Cornwall Council and the Royal Navy, they helped to host a two-day Lego robot STEM competition for several hundred school children. Serco aeronautical engineering apprentices served as judges and referees whilst hosting an interactive wind tunnel exhibit as part of a science show. Our Culdrose colleagues also championed STEM for Serco at the Armed Forces Youth Day STEM Event in Falmouth, providing interactive challenges to engage and entertain hundreds more local children all day long.

Apprenticeship levy gifting

Serco have pledged £1.4m so far through apprenticeship levy gifting to help 29 small to mid-sized companies. By making this pledge we are using our unspent levy to support local communities, address skills shortages in specific sectors and regions and encourage apprenticeship programmes throughout England.

Driving social value

Our UK Social Value leads have been driving greater maturity in Serco regarding all dimensions of the UK Government Social Value agenda, which includes elevating charity engagement and volunteering to new heights across the UK business. Find out more.

Our Ladywood Leisure Centre team in Birmingham, UK – winners of the National Fitness Awards 'Community Involvement' category – partnered with non-profit organisations in 2023 to provide free fitness programmes for local disadvantaged communities. With the Birmingham Children's Trust, they offered 12 months of free swimming lessons and swimwear funding for asylum seeker children in the Birmingham care system. With local youth charity, InUnity, our colleagues hosted a summer programme of swimming, sport and other activities for dozens of homeless families living in temporary accommodation. Find out more.
Supporting charitable organisations

Our defence business in Belgium, in collaboration with the Serco Foundation, proudly supported Waterloo Uncovered, a ground-breaking charity that combines world-class archaeology on the historic Waterloo Battlefield with vital veteran care and recovery efforts.

Serco was proud to partner with the Clontarf Foundation in 2023, which included $50,000 of funding to support the provision of student places in Clontarf Academies across Australia. Established in 2000, the Clontarf Foundation works to improve the prospects of young First Nations people, equipping them to participate more meaningfully in society. Through our partnership with Clontarf – supporting an annual programme of student interaction, celebration and work experience – we provided opportunities for Clontarf students to practise social skills, build confidence, and grow understanding of future opportunities available to them. This included individuals and teams from Serco visiting Clontarf Academies and participating in their events, such as the Mid-North Coast Clontarf Academies Employment Forum.
Community initiatives

Our Community Initiatives Team at the Clarence Correctional Centre in Australia work with government, businesses and non-profit organisations to bring colleagues and inmates together in support of local community projects. Aiding prisoner rehabilitation, these projects have included: partnering with volunteer organisation, BlazeAid, to support natural disaster recovery efforts; working with social services agency, Anglicare, to prepare care packages for families in need; and participating in an urban revitalisation project for the city of Grafton. Most recently, another team of Clarence colleagues and inmates spent c.1,300 hours alongside Grafton community volunteers, helping to deliver 'the biggest and best Grafton Jacaranda Festival in history' for c.45,000 people. Renovating Al-Mutarid Tolerance School

From January-August 2023, our colleagues at the UAE-based Serco/Mubadala joint venture, Khadamat Facilities Management, masterminded and delivered a full-scale renovation of the local Al-Mutarid Tolerance School, which helps disadvantaged families gain access to quality education. 142 volunteers, including senior leaders from Khadamat, Serco and Mubadala, visited the school to deliver a comprehensive programme of work – from replacing air conditioning units and drain covers, and repairing doors and painting classrooms, to general carpentry and washroom repairs, installing curtains and safety signage, and delivering donated furniture and resources.
