- Serco wins at the Aviation Business Awards
Serco has won the "Technology Implementation of the year 2013" at the Aviation Business Awards (ABA) for the implementation of the tower simulator at Dubai Airport, also known as TOSIM-1.
The annual ABA has established itself as the ultimate celebration of achievements within the Middle East aerospace industry and the 2013 Awards ceremony included 14 categories covering the airline, airport, air traffic services and cargo sectors, along with supporting niches. The "Technology Implementation of the year" award recognised a specific technology implement within the Middle East over the past year, with evidence that the implementation was smooth and resulted in limited service interruptions, that the project was successful in meeting end objectives, and the solution was unique for the region.
TOSIM-1 is the world's largest tower simulator and has provided the Serco Team with the ability to support Dubai International and Dubai World Central airports for all tower related training and research programs. The simulator configuration and system specification were designed by the Serco team and ensures that the air traffic controllers of today, and tomorrow, are more prepared and better trained than ever before. The system has been enhanced beyond any rival systems by integrating all the controller tools from the live operation. These include communications, ground movement radar display, approach radar, airfield lighting and control and monitoring and electronic flight progress strips. The simulator is equipped with seven controller working positions and up to thirteen pseudo pilot positions which future proofs Dubai air navigation services against tower expansion and increased airport and airspace complexities.
This new tool will mean more realistic training in simulation which will result in the elimination of disruptions for the airport and airlines as new procedures and technologies are brought into service.
The simulator is capable of mimicking any airport in the world, which enables best practice used in other regions, to be immersively trialled and where required enhanced in the simulator before deployment into the Dubai airspace. This capability also ensures the highest safety standards are adhered to without the chance of disruptions to live operations.
This world class facility also enables prototyping and development of concepts enabling reductions in deployment time helping Dubai to keep pace with the continual traffic growth. In addition this simulator provides a high fidelity training environment for controllers resulting in reduced training times, ultimately saving money for the business and its stakeholders.
