Dubai Metro carries record number of passengers

Published: 6 Jan 2016

The Dubai Metro, which is operated by Serco on behalf of the Roads and Transport Authority, carried a record number of passengers during the New Year celebrations in Dubai. On New Year’s Eve and in the early hours of New Year’s Day, Serco transported more than 822,000 passengers on the iconic Metro system. This is more passengers, in a 24-hour period, than the system has transported since the service launched in 2009.

David Greer, CEO of Serco Middle East, said: “We are delighted that we were able to transport so many people, allowing them to enjoy the New Year celebrations in Dubai, on what turned out to be a particularly challenging night for Dubai Authorities who also had to contend with a major fire at the The Address Downtown Hotel Dubai. In addition to the million passengers on the Dubai Metro we were also able to transport a record 31,000 people on the Dubai Tram. I would like to pay particular tribute to the hard work and dedication of our people who ensured the smooth running of the system during the busiest ever period for the Metro.”
