Piotr Mikewicz, street cleaner

Published: 4 Sep 2012

It is with great sadness that we can confirm that our colleague, Piotr Mikiewicz, who was critically injured on Wednesday when he tried to prevent a burglary, died the following evening from the injuries he sustained. Piotr, being the good citizen he was, acted instinctively and immediately when he saw a crime being committed while he was carrying out his daily duties. Piotr was a street cleaner on our contract providing environmental services to the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham.

Mike Boult, director, Serco said, "We are all deeply shocked by the news that Piotr has died.He was a unique and special person, and he will be sorely missed, but our loss is nothing compared to that of his family and friends. They are in our thoughts, and on behalf of everyone at Serco I want to send them our sincerest sympathies and condolences. We will do everything we can to support them at this very difficult time."

"Piotr was a popular member of Serco's close knit environmental services team, not only because of his hard working nature but because he was a friend to everyone with a colourful and friendly personality. Anyone who knew Piotr knew he was a truly good and honest person.  He had a strong sense of what was right and wrong. He wasn't just a road sweeper he was a part of the community he worked within genuinely caring about the residents and his 'beat'."

Anthony Leonard, contract manager, Serco said, "Piotr was a truly good person who was immensely proud of the job he did and he cared about the people on his 'beat'. His act of selfless bravery will have been driven by his immense sense of 'what is right' and the need to look after 'his residents'.  Everyone on the contract will miss him but his loss will be most felt by his colleagues in the north team. He was  a very brave and selfless man. He will be sorely missed."

Albert, supervisor, worked alongside Piotr on a daily basis. He said,"Piotr was at the centre of making our team one big happy family. With his warmth and personality he was more than just a work colleague, everyone looked up to him - he was a true gentleman. He's left a lot of friends behind here and on his beat. He knew and cared about them, he was part of their community. He was a special man."

Cllr Greg Smith, Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) Council Deputy Leader, said: "The outpouring of love and respect for Piotr has been overwhelming. The whole borough is uniting to remember a thoroughly decent, brave and hardworking man. Piotr was a dedicated public servant, who cared passionately about his work and the streets and people around him.

"He will be solely missed around here but he will never be forgotten. Our thoughts are with his widow and family and we are doing everything possible to support them through these dark days."

Tributes have been flooding in for Piotr and are being coordinated by Hammersmith and Fulham Council. www.lbhf.gov.uk
