London Mayor Sadiq Khan commends HMP Thameside for commitment to employee health and wellbeing

HMP Thameside, managed and operated by Serco on behalf of the Ministry of Justice, has been recognised for its dedication to its employees by the London Healthy Workplace Charter, a Mayor of London backed programme that enables businesses to show that their employees’ health and wellbeing really matters to them.
Businesses and organisations from across London were accredited for their commitment to the health and wellbeing of their workforces and representatives were presented with an award at a special ceremony at City Hall on Monday night by Laura Tenison of JoJo Maman Bebe.
The award acknowledges that employers are increasingly recognising the link between healthy, happy employees and a more productive workforce. Figures show that 27.3m days are lost each year due to sickness absence or injury and an estimated 914,300 adults of working age in London are affected by a common mental disorder such as anxiety and depression, with £10.4 billion lost each year to London business and industry.
The London Healthy Workplace Charter helps organisations address these challenges by encouraging them to improve and develop wellbeing programmes across a wide range of areas, including support for mental health and wellbeing, smoking, alcohol and substance misuse, improving physical activity and promoting healthy eating.
Craig Thomson, Serco’s Contract Director at HMP Thameside said: “The staff at HMP Thameside do a challenging and demanding job. Looking after and improving their health and wellbeing is a real priority for us and so we are delighted and proud to receive this award and to have our efforts recognised.”
