Serco and Fleetclear win National Innovation Award for game-changing safety technology.

Published: 4 Dec 2025

Serco, in partnership with Fleetclear, is proud to have won the Advanced Fleet Management and Software Innovation award at the CiTTi Awards 2025, held in London on 25 November.

The award celebrates a breakthrough safety system called the Live Lane Information System (LLIS) , technology designed to protect waste and recycling crews working near live traffic.

Every day, our teams need to step into busy roads to collect waste and recycling. LLIS uses smart cameras and AI to spot approaching vehicles up to 30 metres away and gives crews a clear visual and optional audible warning before they step out. It’s a simple idea that can make a big difference, helping ensure our people get home safely at the end of every day.

The system was developed by Fleetclear and refined through pilot trials with Serco’s frontline teams in Sandwell and Wandsworth, who played a crucial role in shaping its design. Their feedback drove improvements such as adjusting the brightness of warning lights for better comfort in low-light conditions, along with other enhancements to boost usability and safety

George Roach, Serco’s Performance and Compliance Director, explained why this matters:

“This idea began after a close call involving one of our loaders, which brought home the reality that behind every shift and every vehicle are people who deserve to go home safely. We became determined to find a better way to protect our crews, and to see that spark turn into an innovation now recognised nationally is incredibly humbling. This is what happens when people care enough to push for something better, and I’m proud of everyone at Serco and Fleetclear who helped make it happen.”

National Health and Safety Executive (HSE) data shows that industry wide, 25 workers lost their lives in 2023 to 2024 due to incidents involving moving vehicles, a 25 percent rise on the previous year — Fleetclear believes LLIS represents a significant step forward for safety across both municipal and commercial fleets.

Chris Waller, Chief Technical Officer at Fleetclear, said:

“We have always worked in collaboration with customers, listened to the challenges they face and developed products to help them improve the safety of their staff, the public and their fleets. Following trials on Serco vehicles operating in Sandwell and Wandsworth the feedback about LLIS has been very positive and we’ve had a lot of interest from other fleet operators who are keen to try it out. We are excited about the positive impact this device can have on the safety of operatives.”

Steve Heywood MBE CMILT, Serco Fleet Director, added:

“We are delighted to have worked collaboratively with Fleetclear to develop this product. With the other systems on the market, the onus is on the car driver to react to any warnings however with LLIS the AI technology offers increased situational awareness to frontline teams when working in live lanes.”
