Serco secures contract to overhaul Typhoon aircraft engines

Published: 13 Oct 2025

Serco is proud to announce the award of a new five-year contract with the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD) to deliver maintenance and logistics services for EJ200 engines, which power the Royal Air Force’s Typhoon aircraft.

Valued at approximately £7.8 million, this contract marks a significant milestone in Serco’s continued growth in aviation engineering and defence support.

Previously subcontracted through Rolls-Royce, Serco will now deliver services directly to RAF Defence Equipment and Support (DE&S), reinforcing its position as a trusted partner in military aviation.

Work will be carried out at RAF Coningsby and RAF Lossiemouth, where Serco teams have long-standing experience supporting EJ200 engine maintenance.

Serco’s Managing Director of Defence, Doug Umbers, commented: “The award of this contract is a testament to the expertise and dedication of our engineering teams, and a strategic step forward as we continue to strengthen our capabilities in maintenance and logistics. I’d like to personally thank everyone involved in the bid process whose hard work has made this possible. We’re excited about the future of this contract and the opportunity to deliver an exceptional service to the MOD.”

Sid Hallam, DE&S EJ200 Operations Manager, said: "This contract will support operational readiness of our Typhoon fleet, ensuring our Royal Air Force continues to have the reliable, mission-essential engine support needed to defend UK airspace and fulfil our NATO commitments. The contract also supports communities by sustaining 26 highly skilled posts - 20 technicians and 6 logisticians - evenly split between RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire and RAF Lossiemouth in Moray."

The contract win follows a series of wins for Serco in Defence this year, including:

  • Three contracts with a combined value of over £1bn to provide Maritime Services to the Royal Navy
  • A ten-year contract worth up to £1.5bn if all options are exercised, to run the Armed Forces Recruitment Service for all UK military personnel
  • A $96 million contract to provide technical services to modernise the US Navy’s guided missile frigates and ship systems
  • A $247 million to support soldier readiness and performance within the US Army’s Holistic Health and Fitness System

And in May of this year, Serco also acquired Northrop Grumman’s mission training and satellite ground network communications software business (MT&S). MT&S provides the US military with advanced mission training services and software that makes satellite ground networks more efficient, and generates annual revenues of approximately US$300 million.
