Gold standard in green tourism
The Serco-operated Northern Isles Ferry Service, NorthLink Ferries, received ‘Gold’ status in the Scottish Green Tourism accreditation programme in January 2024. Providing scheduled lifeline passenger and freight services to the Scottish Northern Isles, our NorthLink colleagues are committed to ensuring an efficient, reliable and sustainable ferry service.
Best practice in sustainability
Through their accreditation programme, Green Tourism recognises the eco-friendly achievements of organisations supporting Scottish tourism. In their words: “Gold businesses have a strong environmental ethos and can provide excellent examples of best practice across sustainability goals.”
To achieve their Gold, our NorthLink colleagues were scored against detailed criteria spanning 15 sustainability focus areas, including Energy, Water, Waste, Carbon and Chemicals in the ‘Planet’ category. As of December 2024, only 33% of all Green Tourism applicants had achieved Gold status, and Serco NorthLink were the only ferry operator to hold Gold status.
Continuous improvement
Northlink also has ISO 14001 accreditation, demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement and efficiencies, including redesigning products to minimise waste, and encourage more sustainable modes of transport.
