Serco wins support contract with global satellite agency EUMETSAT
Published: 14 Oct 2013
Serco has been awarded a contract by EUMETSAT to manage and operate their Users' Services Support Team from 1 January 2014.
Under the contract, Serco Services GmbH, based in Darmstadt, Germany, will manage the day to day operations of EUMETSAT's Data Centre, which holds the archives all of the past, current and future data from EUMETSAT's satellites. Serco already supports the routine production for Climate Data Records and provides a Helpdesk facility, an essential interface to the external user community.
EUMETSAT is the intergovernmental organisation that supplies weather and climate-related satellite data, images and products to the National Meteorological services of its member and co-operating states in Europe. They operate a system of meteorological satellites that observe the atmosphere and ocean and land surfaces 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
The service provided by EUMETSAT helps to enhance and safeguard the daily lives of European citizens. They aid meteorologists in identifying and monitoring the development of potentially dangerous weather situations and in issuing timely forecasts and warnings to emergency services and local authorities, helping to mitigate the effects of severe weather and protecting human life and property.
This information is also critical to the safety of air travel, shipping and road traffic, and to the daily business of farming, construction and many other industries and other users worldwide.
