Published: 12 Feb 2016

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited Serco-managed HMP Thameside this week in her role as Patron of the Butler Trust to see first-hand the work of the people who work there.

She was greeted by the Prison Director Jeanne Bryant, and toured the prison where she met a number of people who have been recognised by the Butler Trust.

These included:

  • Mr Neil Barclay, who is the Librarian and Learning Skills Lead at the prison, who will be presented with a Butler Trust Award in March. His Award citation reads: “Nominated by prisoners, and described by a colleague as ‘our library superstar’, Neil wins his Award for the outstanding dedication, skill and creativity he has shown in transforming the prison’s library into a dynamic learning and resource centre, much valued by prisoners and staff”.
  • Mrs Philippa Breffitt, the Family Interventions Manager who received a Butler Trust Commendation in 2015 “for transforming HMP Thameside’s child and family services, developing an ever-growing range of interventions aimed at maintaining and enhancing family relationships”.
  • Mrs Sarah Chambers and Ms Lisa Rafferty jointly received a Butler Trust Commendation in 2015 “for the commitment, passion and belief they have bought to their work to tackle gang violence and create a safer environment at HMP Thameside”.
