Serco appoints new Contract Director at HMP Doncaster

Published: 8 Aug 2016

Jerry Spencer has taken over as Serco’s new Custodial Operations Director at HMP Doncaster. Jerry is a highly respected and experienced Prison Director, who comes to Doncaster after more than four years as Governor of HMP Risley in Cheshire.

Jerry has been working in prisons for 28 years. He began his Prison Service career in London in 1988 working as a Prison Officer, and has steadily worked his way through every rank, predominantly working in the North West of England. Jerry was appointed Deputy Governor of HMP Liverpool in 2007 and he remained there until 2012 when he became Governor of HMP Risley, a large category C establishment in Cheshire with 1100 adult men. Jerry successfully led this prison through the most significant change programme that the Public Sector Prison Service had seen in many years. Prior to joining the Prison Service Jerry spent eight years in the Merchant Navy as a Deck Officer.

Talking about his new job, Jerry said: “I’m really proud and excited to be at HMP Doncaster and we have a great team who are working really hard to improve the prison. Great progress has been made here in recent months to meet the challenges that we face, but I know that we have much more to do to improve and make Doncaster a prison that everyone is proud of once again.”

Jerry is married and has one son. He is passionate about leading people and giving them the opportunity and skills to change the lives of offenders in our care.
