HMP Kilmarnock hosts national prison Chaplains conference to help prisoners return to society

HMP Kilmarnock, managed by Serco on behalf of the Scottish Prison Service, recently saw Chaplains and representatives of many other faiths congregate together to discuss how to help prisoners make the transition back into society at the end of their time in prison.

The faith representatives came from prisons that Serco manages around the UK from as far away as Ashfield near Bristol and Thameside in South East London and the event was declared to be highly successful by everyone who attended. 

Stevie Erskine, Chaplain at HMP Kilmarnock, said: “Being the host establishment for the national Serco prison Chaplains conference, we were humbled to bring representatives of many faiths together to discuss areas of best practice and other learning taking place within our prisons at this time.

“We also recognised this was an opportunity to discuss the process of "throughcare" and where as members of prison chaplaincy teams we can assist those in our care to successfully make the transition from custody back to their communities.

Those in attendance also heard from Mr Bill Taylor, Scottish Prison Service Chaplaincy advisor who provided a history of his work in prison ministry.   Commenting on the conference, Bill said:  “This was an inspiring day.  It is always fascinating when Chaplains come together and share concerns, work and fellowship.”
