Serco Leisure to operate former David Lloyd health club in Maidstone

Published: 24 May 2023

From June 5th, Serco Leisure and its operating partner in the region, Maidstone Leisure Trust (MLT), will begin management of a health and fitness club previously operated by David Lloyd.

It had been announced in February of this year that the David Lloyd facility at Lockmeadow Leisure Complex in Maidstone would close at the end of May. From that point, and as part of its Distressed Contract Workstream, Serco Leisure engaged with Maidstone Borough Council (MBC) regarding the possibility of keeping the club open.

On May 16th, it was announced that Serco Leisure and MLT would become the new operators at the centre, which features a swimming pool, 200 station gym and sauna/steam room. The facility will continue to operate as a private members club.

Simon Lane, Serco’s Managing Director for Leisure & Micromobility said:

“This is a fabulous opportunity for Serco in the region. We are the trusted operator of two facilities in the town already, which will have played in our favour when discussions about the future management of this club were taking place. We now look ahead to an exciting opening date for the newly named Lockmeadow Health Club.”

Commenting on the new operator, MBC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Arts - Cllr Claudine Russell said:

“After extensive marketing and interest from other providers, Serco Leisure’s offer in both terms of financial reward and service provided, put them as the front runners to continue running this private members’ club.

“We know how much our residents have valued this facility in the town centre for many years and are delighted that it the facility will remain open as a place to relax, workout and socialise for the people of Maidstone.”

Serco Leisure in partnership with the Trust and on behalf of MBC operate the Mote Park Outdoor Adventure and Maidstone Leisure Centre.
