The challenge
Research by Serco owned Experience Lab found there was a skills gap for participants on the Restart Scheme, with 13% holding Level 5 or higher qualifications (e.g. Foundation Degree, HND, NVQ). These participants struggled to find value in the Restart Scheme as it primarily focused on basic skill development and job readiness, which was less relevant to their advanced educational background and skill set.

Our solution
In June 2023, Serco launched a pilot called 'Restart Scheme Blue' with 319 participants, across Serco and its delivery partners. This initiative aimed to offer professional mentoring support specifically to highly skilled individuals.
The programme entailed a series of eight one-on-one sessions spread out over a 12-week period, with each session concentrating on different facets of professional development.
The impact
Restart Scheme Blue was expanded and officially launched in April 2024 to all Serco delivery partners in West Central and Wales. The programme now employs nine* part-time mentors and has assisted 142 more people in finding work compared to previous initiatives. Furthermore, these numbers are projected to rise as more individuals join the uniquely tailored scheme. *data to Nov 2024
"Three words sum up my time with Restart Blue: positivity, support, and opportunity. My mentor Katie and her team have provided each in ample measure.
