Linda had held down a variety of roles before joining Serco as a Prison Officer.

From working in a pub and a restaurant, to being a waitress, she particularly enjoyed the sense of teamwork and community she gained from her time working on a vintage farm.

It was while working on this farm that Linda became aware of a prison being built locally and began to wonder what career opportunities were available there. Linda loved her time working in the outdoors, but she was also keen to establish a secure career.

So, despite her only knowledge of what working in a prison would be like coming from TV programmes, she applied to join Serco as a Prison Officer.

She was buoyed by the belief that “good work can be done in prisons with the correct people and a balanced outlook on what has led the prisoners there. The right people and interventions can potentially change lives for the better.”

Over 25 years, Linda has developed in ways she never thought possible. She’s progressed into Public Protection and Offender Management. From there, she became an Assistant Director delivering special projects and, she’s currently working as a Senior Project Lead for Justice and Immigration. She says, “Whilst I had hoped to develop a career, I never expected to progress and have so many opportunities.” She’d like to encourage others to benefit from the support and opportunity Serco offers as she has.

I’d recommend women of all ages and all life experiences consider opportunities within Serco. The Justice and Immigration environment should not discourage women from considering roles here, and Serco will continue to get stronger as more women with transferrable skills, from varying backgrounds, join, develop and progress into leadership roles.
